Detroit flutist Althea René is the daughter of Funk Brother Dezie McCullers and a former Wayne County deputy sheriff who balanced law enforcement with nighttime jazz club performances for 11 years. Her 2013 album In the Flow, produced by Grammy winner Michael Broening, made history when its title track became the first flute-featured single to reach number one on the Billboard smooth jazz chart. She has performed at major festivals including North Sea Jazz Festival and Austin Jazz Festival.
